Another gem from [livejournal.com profile] sartorias, as an ebook from Book View Cafe. Here's the scoop:

A light-hearted Regency folly, starring Miss Clarissa Harlowe who wants a quiet life-but falls in love with a smuggler, the marquess of St. Tarval. Tarval’s sister, Lady Kitty, is determined to write a dramatic Gothic to save her brother’s mortgaged estate--if she can reach London. Clarissa’s much-pursued cousin, Mr. Philip Devereaux, is inexplicably intrigued by Lady Kitty, who is doing her best to encourage the match between him and Clarissa, except that Clarissa is now betrothed to . . . Lord Wilburfolde.

And so the madness of changing partners begins in the dance of love.

In case you missed my blog on Book View Cafe, involving the infamous lesbian chocolate sex scene -- you know, the one that so distracted the enemy general that it changed the outcome of an entire battle in space -- here it is. Enjoy!

Beloved spouse, [livejournal.com profile] davetrow, says of his newly-ebook-releasedExordium, The Phoenix in Flight:

If you're looking for space opera with “coruscating, ravening beams of unstoppable force” (in every color but purple), devious aristocratic intrigue and sexual tension, and high-velocity custard flingers, check out The Phoenix in Flight.

From BVC: Smith and Trowbridge describe the flavor of their five-book space opera Exordium as a cross between Star Wars and Dangerous Liaisons with a touch of the Three Stooges. With its faWant death rays, aristocratic intrigue and sexual tension, and high-velocity custard flingersst-moving blend of humor and horror, of high-tech skiffy and the deep places of the human heart, The Phoenix in Flight launches the reader into a complex, multi-layered universe as Brandon nyr-Arkad, dissolute youngest son of the ruler of the Thousand Suns, abandons the life of Service planned for him and flees into the lawless Rift. Only slowly does he discover that the world he rejected now lies in smoking ruins as the ritual vengeance of Jerrode Eusabian against Brandon’s father, twenty years in preparation, culminates in an explosion of interstellar violence. With both his brothers dead and his father the Panarch imprisoned, Brandon becomes the Panarchy’s last hope.

[livejournal.com profile] sartorias is featured on the Front Page of Book View Cafe today, and offers some commentary on her LJ.

As a reader, I stand up and cheer at the availability of such wonderful stories -- and if you haven't checked out Sherwood Smith, go and do it without delay, for you are in for a treat! People wail about the deluge of utter drek out there in Phosphor-Land, but hasn't it always been true that we don't like everything we read? Having a venue like BVC, where you can read the first chapter to see if it's to your taste, and where you can find out of print books, books that were far too marvelous to disappear, provides a wonderful guide through the deluge.

(And while you're there, you can check out my ebooks and free stories.)

As a writer (and a member of BVC), I find this adventure in collective publishing exciting. It reminds me of one of the most successful strategies for bookstore signings--get a bunch of local authors and hold a panel discussion. Readers may come to hear one of us, but get intrigued by what another has to say. Plus we offer something of value, a stimulating discussion, not just an autograph if you buy a book. So check out the blog as well as the bookstore.

Okay, I have special reasons to be tickled about this announcement. Sherwood is not only a dear friend, but my husband's best friend and collaborator (the wonderful Exordium series that came out in the '90s) and a fantastically good writer. So here's yet another reason to hie yourselves hence to Book View Cafe (and register for free so you can see more good stuff.)

On Thursday, January 28, Sherwood Smith will be joining the Book View Café team. Smith began her publishing career in 1986, writing mostly for young adults and children. To date she’s published over thirty books. The latest was Treason’s Shore, last of the four-book Inda series, with Banner of the Damned coming out from DAW next year. She also writes for young adults, her most popular book being Crown Duel, from Firebirds. She’s also written short fiction, published in various venues. Sherwood Smith has collaborated with several authors, including the Grand Master Andre Norton. One of her books was an Anne Lindbergh Honor Book; she’s twice been a finalist for the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award and once a Nebula finalist. Some of her stories have been reprinted in “best of” anthologies, and her work has been translated into numerous languages.

For her debut on the 28th, Smith will be offering her science fiction novelette, "Being Real."

Visit Smith’s bookshelf at BookViewCafe.com: http://www.bookviewcafe.com/index.php/The-Sherwood-Smith-Bookshelf/

Watch for chapters of Smith’s romantic fantasy, Crown Duel, on Thursdays at http://www.bookviewcafe.com.

Also coming soon from BVC, Smith’s YA adventure, A Stranger to Command.
