New Year's resolutions
Dec. 30th, 2006 05:37 pmI gave these up a long time ago, in favor of setting goals -- for the next year, 5 years, 10 years, lifetime. It's fascinating to look back on what I thought was important a decade or two ago, what I have achieved, what no longer applies, what still matters.
From 1986: (comments in bold)
1 year: a second child Rose!
finish WEIREMASTER this novel was rewritten as NORTHLIGHT, published by DAW in 1995
sell another short story I sold 2 -- "Stormgod" to SWORD & SORCERESS, and "The Wasteland" to RED SUN OF DARKOVER
5 yr goal: sell a novel DAW bought JAYDIUM in 1991
10 yr: established writing career by 1996, I had 2 novels in print, and several dozen short stories
vacation home ??? -- well, I now live in a redwood forest, does that count?
additional goals from this year included traveling with my mother and mother-in-law, both now deceased. Never did it. Shame.
What are your goals and aspirations?

Date: 2006-12-31 06:36 am (UTC)2007 - get "the" story finally written and sent to the editor as requested, and get at least the draft done on the second story of it.
- get my daughter through high school and into university
- start feeling like I am "enough" and stop feeling inadequate and imperfect.
Indefinite goals/dreams: get nominated for the John Campbell award, have a story on the cover of Analog, touch an original Bernini sculpture (probably in Rome), visit Britain, take up the viola again and join a quartet playing baroque music for pleasure, get fit and healthy, and buy more books.

Date: 2007-01-01 04:26 am (UTC)I especially like the viola dream. If I can start piano lessons for the first time at age 58, there is musical hope for everyone!

Date: 2007-01-03 12:17 am (UTC)I played viola for a few years from grade 8 through high school including for the local symphony, but I was never very good and I never owned my own instrument. It's on my Someday list.
