The fire is still over the hill and several miles from our house. As of about 5 pm, we're outside the evacuation zone. I'm currently in Santa Cruz, where brown smoke is billowing across the sky. It's hot and dry, as usual for August, but the wind has died down and mist is expected overnight/tomorrow morning.

The latest news has the burn about 2800 acres, 0% contained.

They're reporting on this, this morning. I hope you're still safe. It sounds very scary.

Yes, fires are scary. We know people in the evacuation zone. I'll take earthquakes any day -- you can't see them coming, they're over in seconds to minutes, and usually you don't have to run for your lives.

I've been thinking what we would grab if we had to evacuate and realizing that we're prepared for earthquakes and power outages, not grab-and-run emergencies. This is a wake-up call.
