My interview at Gavilan College on May 5, 2009 is now online, so if you've ever wondered what this crazy woman sounds like, you now can watch!

It is so strange to hear myself, to see how I use my hands, the funny expressions that flit across my face. Sometimes I look and sound amazingly like my sister, but she probably says the same about me. I was pretty nervous at first -- I can hear it in my voice -- but after a while, I settled down and things flowed more smoothly.

Wow. that's a great interview. You are so composed and clear and interesting. (And I love your shawl.)

So glad you enjoyed it. As for being articulate -- you'd think I was a writer or something Not all writers are good speakers, but I studied theater in high school and college, and then taught all kinds of things -- from academic subjects like physiology to baby swim classes to writing fiction to folk dancing. I got used to holding forth on all kinds of subjects.

Thanks for sharing that. It was like sitting in Spinners again. ;-)

I miss the old gang, but have not found a group up here to connect with. I was in a group with Denise and some other fine folk, but it was in Sunnyvale and I was working full time, so the night meetings (1 hour drive either way, the usual tortuous mountain roads) were incredibly stressful. Then for a while, I was in a local group, only about 3 of us, the others just beginners and not readers of sf/f. About that time, I started working on the first Darkover books, and for various reasons was asked not to discuss them. I sort of got used to writing in isolation, although as you know, I get feedback at some point. Just not a workshop.

I do try to find occasions to get together with writer friends and schmooze shop-talk (cons are also good for that).

I miss the old gang too. I've been here 10 years and have not found a writing group that's serious about writing. I thought of driving "down the hill" to a monthly meeting, but I get so stressed out on the drive that it's not worth it. At least I can see my "writing problems" clearer. It's just hard to put the novel down for weeks at a time so that when I pick it up I can see it with a clear eye. Screws up my momentum.
