And get to work, changing California's constitution ourselves. Time to take back our state and our lives.

Although I definitely had a moment of, "Aw, cr@p!" I'm surprisingly hopeful. I never expected to see legal gay marriage for decades, perhaps not even in my lifetime. I am disappointed and angry about the State Supreme Court's ruling, but not disheartened. This is not the final word; it is only one setback. The story is still unfolding, and the forces of justice, equality, and yes, love, will only grow stronger.

MoveOn.org sent out a question: Should we aim for the Marriage Equality Act of 2010 or 2012? How energized are we?

What do you think? Time for another [livejournal.com profile] rainbowafghan?

Here's where my hope comes in: they decided to preserve those 18l marriages already made. So 18k people have their civil rights protected. Excellent! As the rest of CA sees that the sky won't fall . . . and meanwhile, that underscores the human tragedies of people who do NOT get those same civil rights, next time, We Win.

I am not energized and no longer live in CA, but will contribute as much as I can.

I contributed what cash I could to Equality California and to a fund aimed at protecting the CA justices who supported the cause. However, perhaps it's also time to remember that ACT-UP played an integral role in raising AIDS awareness among the idiot masses. Marriage rights here in Missouri were taken away at the speed of light before the gay community even realized it was an issue. California has a chance. Organize, educate, inform, raise awareness and win hearts. But even Ghandi knew that civil disobedience has a place.

Lots of thoughtful discussion here. Thanks for the link. This is certainly a complex, nuanced situation. I understand that the State Supreme Court also recognized gay marriages performed in other states during the "window" period. This adds to the unsustainability of the present state -- it's rife with untenable inconsistencies and like any unbalance system, must change.
