My novelette, "The Price of Silence," appears in the April/May issue of FANTASY & SCIENCE FICTION. I just read this review in THE FIX:

"Deborah J. Ross’s “The Price of Silence” is a pitch-perfect example of successfully crossing genres—a hard science fiction story that happens to be, at its heart, a mystery. Characterization is the key here, as Ross gives us a look at life aboard a space vessel, as well as a taste of cosmic espionage on a massive scale. The characters here carry the plot, their relationships—personal, distant, friendly, or hostile—moving things along in an expert fashion. Good characterization is a crucial element in suspending disbelief, and Ross accomplishes the arduous task of making her characters living, breathing individuals rather than ambulatory plot devices within the first page. Hard science fiction elements abound as well, but Ross never allows them to overwhelm the reader. The pace is lively, and the climax, while leaving the reader with more questions than answers, is imminently satisfying. All told, “The Price of Silence” is the most professionally composed piece in this issue, and one of the most enjoyable."

Who knows, someone may notice it for a Nebula?

Brava!

Thank you! The process of awards nominations is mysterious to me. Sometimes, I have great faith that wonderful stories will surely be honored. Other times, it seems that only the Big Names get any attention, no matter what the venue. And now, the Neb rules are changed, so who knows?

Yep, it's good to be reminded that although many folks around here know me as an editor, I am first and primarily a writer, and that I can actually write.

Thank you! Your little hummingbird seems to be dancing with joy. We keep a feeder all year round because we have non-migratory species, but they seem to be finding ample food elsewhere at the moment, judging by the level of the violently-red liquid.

I think the hummingbird looks that way too--I always use him for an icon for celebratory things--like congratulations :-)

Hummingbirds are so beautiful! I hope you're seeing them round your garden even if they're not drinking from your feeder.

Thank you! I've pointed a couple of new writers at your LJ. Do keep talking to your characters -- it's instructive!

Were you in Spinners when I workshopped a very early version of PREHISTORIC ALIEN RUINS FROM HELL? This story was from that first section, in space. The rest -- once we're down on the planet with the sabertooths and cool beasties, may end up as a YA series. When I have time to do some on-spec writing!

That title sounds familiar but that's it. Hard to forget a title like that. LOL
