This is the Year of Nurse Deborah On Duty. Next week, I'll be doing post-op care for another friend, this one local. I no longer have enough neurons online to protest, I simply show up and do what is asked. This time, I'll take my laptop and be disciplined about writing. I've been getting up to speed on the 3rd Seven-Petaled Shield book and don't want to lose momentum.

Winter garden notes: we've had not only rain, but sun and even a few days in the 70s. Our bok choy went wild, and we discovered that it does not turn bitter when it bolts, and the long stems and flowers are delicious. The asparagus bed has woken up, but slowly. We're not drowning in it yet. Collards and kale will take a while, ditto sugar snap peas. There's something truly luxurious about fresh vegetables after a long soggy winter.

In other news, Oka caught a rat in the garden and killed it with one bite. I didn't witness the deed, but Dave assures me it was quick, and that Oka lost all interest once the thing was dead. His breeding lines have strong prey drive.

I've started a new piano piece, a setting for "Evenstar" from LotR. My David Lang piece, "Cristofori's Dream," is coming along nicely. It's long, with lots of repetition, so once I get a pattern down, I get a whole chunk of it.

Good luck with the nursing, I hope it won't be too stressful...

Thank you. The care part is actually easy, it's the being away from home and my regular routine that's challenging -- plus all the stuff that builds up. I end up playing catch up on catch up.
