I dropped by the library to return an audio book and take out another. Nothing on the shelf appealed to me, so I browsed the CD section and came away with MICHAEL BOLTON: MY SECRET PASSION: THE ARIAS. What gorgeous, passionate singing! Familiar arias from Turandot, Tosca, I Pagliacci, Aida -- but also some I don't know, all sung with enormous expressivity and presence. When I was checking it out, the librarian said he used to be a rock singer (??!!). The quote on the cover is: "I didn't realize that I would become so overwhelmed by the power of this great music." Definitely something to add to my collection.

Michael Bolton has always been famous to me for his rock and power ballads. He has a very powerful and moving voice.

I'm glad someone else likes him -- I went to amazon.com to order a copy of the CD and was surprised to find a string of really nasty comments. The primary reviewer did agree with me about Bolton's clear emotional connection with the music. He (Bolton) may not have a "classically trained" voice, a light tenor as opposed to something pear-shaped, dark, and dramatic, but I think the ability to convey the heart of the music is as important as making a beautiful tone. I feel the same way about instrumental musicians who are technical virtuosos without soul. Perhaps I have a more positive experience of Bolton since I'm a fair ignoramus about pop music, so do not bring any snide prejudices to listening to this CD.
