Juggling settling-in-after-WorldCon and getting-ready-for-beach. Feels mildly schizo. Fortunately, work was easy, as boss on vacation, so no patients to get upset over my rapidly-resolving black eye. The lump is still quite tender, so I suspect a bone bruise. I had a few of them over the years in kung fu. Still have some Chinese bruise medicine, which I've been applying nightly. Can't tell if that or simple time is helping. I like the way it smells, though, nostalgic of past times.

The nights have been getting cold -- mid-50s! and mornings overcast/foggy, but we continue to have bright sunny afternoons. A good portion of my time has been spent harvest, blanching and freezing. Mostly wax and green beans. A few years ago, Dave's sister gave us one of those Seal-A-Meal gadgets, and I am at last learning to use it. I'm not easy about canning vegetables; even with a boiling water bath (which cooks them to death), there's the issue of botulism. But freezing, after a brief dip in boiling water to inactivate the enzymes, is safe and easy, and the vacuum seal thingie keeps freezer burn to a minimum. Alas, I may be gone during the peak tomato season. So Dave will have to assault friends and neighbors with produce.

Much writing activity, a polishing of a book I wrote some years ago, one very special to me, that elicited some editorial interest at WorldCon. My prose has improved since I wrote it, and I want to present it at its best. Have to get it finished, printed out and off to my agent THIS WEEK, since Saturday is the day I leave.

Writer's/personal retreat on private beach halfway between LA and San Diego, a cottage I've rented from the family of friends almost every year since 1980, replete with wonderful memories. My version of a personal vacation is a gentle balance of exercise, sun, and uninterrupted writing time. Better with a writer friend, so we can bounce ideas back and forth, plus that creative energy. Some socializing, walking on the beach at sunset, tidepooling, lots of napping. Should be closer to sanity when I return!
