A stunningly beautiful hawk landed on the back fence this morning. I quickly called Randy to come see her. She stayed on the fence for several minutes, allowing us a long look. The mama squirrel in the seedbath was oblivious to the hawk. The hawk cast her yellow eye around the yard and we told her to help herself to as many rats as she wanted. She was a medium-sized raptor; larger than a falcon, but not as huge as the red-tailed hawks.
I had to dig through my bird book to figure out what kind of hawk she was and finally found her: a red-shouldered hawk. She had more white on her lower torso than the one in this photo, and the yellow patch on her upper beak was brilliantly yellow. I hope she comes back.
