In honor of Dave's return from a business trip to Washington D.C., since he likes a lot of fruit in his oatmeal,

1 c old-fashioned oatmeal
1 large Pink Lady apple, chopped
2 T chopped pecans
2 T flaxseed meal
2 T dried blueberries
2 T raisins
2 c water
pinch salt

microwave 10 minutes. Dave serves his with sliced bananas and brown sugar. I use sweetener to keep the refined sugar down. We ate it with grapefruit from our tree.

Pink Lady apples are awesome -- after Winesaps disappeared from the stores, I thought I'd never find something I liked as well. The Lady does it!

I discovered Pink Ladies at a farmer's market in Santa Monica in the early '90s -- no regular market had them, but this one apple farmer was into interesting types of apples. I've seen Winesaps at farmers markets and an occasional health food store that buys locally, so there are still a few trees around.

Black Twig is another fairly new, tasty apple. Dave likes the crisp-tartness of Pink Ladies and Braeburns. For eating, I sometimes prefer a slightly sweeter apple, like Jonagold or Gala, and I'm not so picky about texture. For putting in oatmeal, though, the tartness of the Pink Lady is divine.

Funny how apples come in fads. I remember when Granny Smiths were all the new rage and nobody wanted the surplus of Pippins. Now it's almost the reverse. I even saw some Mutsu at the health food store yesterday; hadn't seen that variety since the old Santa Monica farmers market days.

No sugar!

I do NOT use sugar! With all that fruit, that would be painting the lily!

Aha! I have discovered how to induce my husband to post on my blog -- say something outrageous!
