"The other place"

A little while ago, I got myself a Twitter account. (Feel free to Follow me: DeborahJRoss) Fear not, I have no intention of leaving this wonderful community! LJ is by far my favorite virtual playground, especially in the way it fosters conversation.
So, Twitter? I'm sort of a medium-slow adopter of new technology, and the 140-character limit to Tweets struck me as absurd, but I thought I should at least give it a try.
What a time sink! At least, there are no long, rambling diatribes to wade through! But it's fun, made for zipping little comments back and forth. Way too much inanity, but every once in a while a sense of connection emerges. This may counterfeit an actual relationship, of course, in the way we feel we "know" celebrities.
What is currently amusing me no end is this business of Followers. Everything you post is public to anyone who "Follows" you and they can "Re-Tweet" to everyone who Follows them... I think that's how it works. I don't get it all, but I've been watching the little notices of who is now "Following" me. Most are friends or friends-of-friends, which is lovely. That's how networks are supposed to work. But some are so random and so inappropriate-to-interest, they must be scatter-shot. I have no idea how they found me or why they're at all interested in what I have to say in 140 characters or less. They go away in a day or two if I don't "Follow" them, so I bet they're trawling for Followers.
Aren't humans strange?
