Every once in a while, I rent something that I love so much I want to own it. (In addition to movies that I see in a theater.) The last time this happened, it was William and Mary, which I've re-watched a couple of times, deriving even more pleasure from it each time. (In case you haven't seen it, it's a BBC series with Martin Clunes about an undertaker and a midwife.)

Today's jewel is The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, based closely on the novels by Alexander McCall Smith. I often prefer novels to film adaptations, but in this case hearing the words -- pacing, vocal intonation, body language -- added tremendously to the story. The acting and direction are first-rate, and the world is one I want to linger in. And it's wonderful to see people of all sizes and skin tones portrayed so lovingly.

I'd love to sit in the shade and sip bush tea with my dear friends. It says "complete first season." Is there more, please?

To date, yes, I think so. But there are radio adaptations.

I had HBO briefly thanks to a DishTV promo, and they aired the show. Loved it. So well cast, and so lovely to see and listen, as you said.

I saw somewhere that there are people asking for a new season, so it must have been canceled. :(

Saw this series on HBO when it ran and loved it! I adore Jill Scott as an actress (have seen her in a few other things), and I was totally taken with the secretary. It was a charming series. I haven't seen info on a second season, but I hope to one day.

I absolutely loved that series. And was so glad they didn't try to "americanize it" to fit with the general viewing audience.
