From the FCNL (Friends Committee on National Legislation):

Today, the House Committee on Homeland Security, led by Rep. Peter King (NY), began hearings on “The Extent of Radicalization in the American Muslim Community and that Community's Response.”

Congress has a responsibility to conduct its affairs in accordance with the Constitution and in a manner that will not create an immediate and lasting danger for a significant number of people in the United States. Not only is it inappropriate for Congress to inquire into the teachings and practices of any religion, but the frame of these hearings encourages people to think of American Muslims as dangerous radicals, putting them at increased risk of threats and violence. Muslim women, who are easily recognized by their dress, could be particularly at risk. [boldface mine]

HUAC should have been buried at a crossroads with a stake through its heart and its mouth stuffed full of garlic. But here it is again, as hungry as ever.

Sometimes I think right-wingers never grew out of their Transformer Dolls: the eeevil Commies magically morph into eevil Mooslims. As Teilhard said, "What would we do without our enemies?"

Peter King, supporter of terrorism

Over on Making Light, Jim Macdonald notes that Peter King was a noted supporter of the IRA, a terrorist group responsible for almost 2000 deaths.

Up here in Canada, there was an item on the CBC newscast about this just now. Apparently one of the main Republicans behind this was a strong supporter of the IRA and was noted for excusing their violent acts. It also noted that half of the Muslim extremists who have been arrested were exposed by tips from w/in the Muslim community. Another story indicated that the number of extremists was so tiny compared to the size of the Muslim community that it was essentially negligible.

This is nasty politics.

Oh, the IRA can't be terrorists. They're white. And Christian. Terrorists are those -other- people.

I really do hope that either reincarnation or Hell is real. Or both. Both would work. Because if it's the former, may they come back as Those Other People, and have to live in the world they're working so hard to create. And if the latter, I have no doubt on what side of Purgatory they'll find themselves.

I'd like to think there's some other way of defining ourselves besides by those we hate.

Having been on the receiving end of right-winger hatred, I hold my Muslims brothers and sisters in particular concern.

Just like folks like Timothy McVeigh can't be "real" terrorists.

Not only that, but members of the Muslim community have offered information that has prevented something like 40% of aborted terrorist attacks.
