You wonder if they don't expect to have authors request their books be taken down (either nicely or through a shark-like agent), but that some advantage accrues in the brief time before the request.

There's so much wonderful stuff in the public domain, you could create a website without such headaches.

They took my book down within a few hours of my request, which puts them ahead of a lot of these sites. Not happy that the book was there to begin with, though...
