Sometimes reading the dispatch logs reminds me that I'm indeed living in a small, largely rural county. Here's last week's log:

Sept 7: An unlocked bicycle was stolen from the XX conference center grounds.

Sept 5. After failing to completely stop at a stop sign, a man was found to be driving while intoxicated.

Sept. 4. Two laptops and a BMX bicycle were reported stolen from a home.

Sept 3. A young man reportedly threatened a young woman with a sword and held onto the girl's cell phone to prevent her from calling police. The young man was later arrested and booked into juvenile hall.

Elsewhere in the county:

Sept. 5. A minor was found in possession of 17.46 grams of marijuana after a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigating officer smelled the drug, searched and subsequently arrested the juvenile, who was then released to a parent.

The sword is an interesting touch.

Oh my, yes, especially in juxtaposition to the cellphone. This bit makes me want to know more, although given he's a juvenile, that's not going to happen.

There is a pretty good-sized community that gets together for fall Highland Games nearby, so I wonder if he or his parents were associated with that group. What strikes me as unfair is that he was send to juvenile hall and the kid with the dope (from the "rich" town") was just sent home.

Yes, that's very unfair.

Isn't it great?

I live in Forks, WA -- just over 3000 people. And I always remember the week that the big news was who left a big fish in the front of our hardware store one night.

Never moving ...

My town's about 4000, at the northernmost tip of a valley that catches ocean fog to the delight of the redwood tree population. The next two towns are smaller, then a big one (7000) near the highway junction.

I love the fish story. Was it a gift? A token of love? Or revenge? We joke that you'd better lock your car during zuccini season or you'll find a 20-pounder in the driver's seat when you come back.

For a while, this man was going around Santa Cruz, putting money in expired parking meters, but the police hauled him away and charged him with tampering with public property or some such.

All of those questions ran through my own mind when I first read about the fish, but it was just a joke "gift". Nothing quite like an anonymous, 3 foot fish on your front step to say "I love ya".

And we have the Attack of the Giant Zuccini here too. On the upside, they're pretty yummy baked/stuffed with sausage or spicy burger.

Well durn, now I'm hungry...
