A Word of Warning About Pirate Sites

Google Alerts has informed me of a spate of pirate sites containing my work. Obviously, as an author I would much prefer my readers to obtain my books through legitimate sources. I like to be paid, like everyone else. But these sites pose hazards for the unsuspecting visitor. They can be laden with viruses and malware. Some require a credit card number in order to register, which means they are actually not pirated book sites but credit card number harvesters.

I do my best to price my self-published work in a way that is fair but affordable. (Alas, I have no control over what my publishers charge.) I participate in Book View Cafe sales that occur a couple of times a year. I want to make my stories available to everyone who wants to read them. Many are available at your library, either in paper editions or through one of the library ebook vendors that Book View Cafe contracts with. I donate autographed copies, usually of hardback editions, for various fundraisers. For the last two winters, I have offered free copies as holiday gifts. And finally, I do my best to arrange for review copies to be made available.

We are part of a community of readers and writers. Let's support one another and leave the pirates to sink under the weight of their own unscrupulous tactics!

BOOK GIVEAWAY - The Heir of Khored

This went up on my blog a couple of days ago. No reason why you folks shouldn't play, too. Leave comments here or there.

The third book in The Seven-Petaled Shield trilogy came out in early June, and I have a box of author's copies sitting here begging to be sent to good homes. I'm happy to oblige them, but I make certain assumptions:

You've read the first two books (The Seven-Petaled Shield, Shannivar) and
You've liked them well enough to want to know how the story ends.

So here's the deal. Write a review of one or both of the earlier volumes and then post a comment here. You don't have to divulge where you put up the review -- online booksellers, your own blog, your town newspaper, social media sites, whatever -- I'll take it on faith that you did. That way, you can say what you thought without the apprehension of the author peering anxiously over your shoulder.

On August 4, I'll choose 5 names at random from the commenters (so the cutoff time will be 9 am Pacific Time). I'll pay media rate postage within the US, although donations are as always welcome. For outside the US, we'll negotiate, maybe splitting the postage.

Hope you enjoy the books, have fun with the reviews, and let the commenting begin!

Book View Cafe Wild Rumpus... er, New Bookstore Launch

For lo, these many months, the elves at Book View Café, beloved spouse among them, have been laboring to transform the ebookstore into something elegant and user-friendly, in which browsing means discovered very cool new books as well as old out-of-print favorites. Now it's done and up and we want all our friends/n/relations to celebrate with us.

To that end, we're giving our readers a chance to win the book of their choice free. There's a lot of hoopla about whether such events are helpful, but I hope this one will be fun. The point is to invite you to check things out. Who knows, you might find something you want. (And such a deal - 95% of the price goes to the author.) So here's the skinny:

BVC's spiffy new bookstore

Take a look around the store anytime up until midnight, June 8, and choose the book you’d like—all the books that are eligible for the giveaway are marked with a gold star. (Omnibus editions and a few other books aren't eligible.) Then come back here and leave a comment with the name and author of the book and why you want it, with the understanding that by entering, you give us permission to use your comment for publicity purposes - so be brilliant. When the promotion ends, I'll select a winner by a mysterious and entirely random process - which means I've written down a date and time, and whoever posts closest to it wins. If you’re the winner, I’ll send you a coupon for the book of your choice.

If you don't have an LJ account and are posting as Anonymous, that's fine. Just identify yourself as a person rather than a spambot.

In addition, to express my appreciation for your hanging around my place here, I'll select 3 other people (by a method identical to above) to receive either a 50% coupon for either of my ebooks (Jaydium or Northlight) or a mass market paperback edition of Zandru's Forge, A Flame in Hali, The Alton Gift, or Hastur Lord.

Want to enter more than once? Can't do it here - I'll get grouchy. Check out these other BVC author sites where you can enter for additional chances to win:

Interview and book giveaway

Over on Cookie's Book Club, a reposting of an interview with me, mostly about Northlight... plus a giveaway of both paperback and ebook editions.
