Light up the world...
Dec. 25th, 2008 09:54 amCandles have been lit, others await, blessings have been sung -- and for the first time, I could read many of the words in Hebrew! A great miracle happened (t)here! No latkes this year, but crispy smashed potatoes substituted nicely (you boil them, smash them flat, then drizzle with oil and oven roast at a hot temp.)
Despite protestations that we already have Too Much Stuff and exhortations to Keep It Simple, presents have arrived, others having previously departed. Dave and I each picked out what we wanted, told the other, and therefore were entirely satisfied, he with his organic cotton terrycloth bathrobe (to wear after emerging from the hot tub, me the red-with-pretty-embroidery flannel nightgown from Lands End). My best college friend, who just got back from 2 weeks in Iran, creating goodwill friendships while buying rugs, sent me a couple of hand block-printed cotton squares and an Indian silk scarf such as worn by women there. Also a CD of her travels.
Currently awaiting Rose and Marcie for breakfast (the real treat of the day, them not the breakfast). They are bringing coffee cake, and I will make eggs with chanterelle mushrooms (that Dave gathered a few years ago and dried, already sauteed in butter and smelling grand). Mimosas for those who indulge. Little pots of pear butter (from our trees) and last summer's blackberries. But most of all, the joy of time with loved ones, and the pride of seeing a daughter so happy in her relationship and so successful in her life. Actually, that goes for both of them! What better gift could I receive?
