Mopey days

Health is yucky these days. Bacteriologically yucky. Last week, a boil appeared on one cheek. I left it alone like a good girl, then it drained and seemed to be healing nicely. Friday, woke up with pain and redness and hot swelling over most of my cheek. Off to my wonderful family doc. Antibiotics, what a great idea. I says, let's hope it's not a resistant strain. She says, I assume it's resistant until culture says otherwise. Me: ? She: it's in the community and you're not a hermit. So, in the absence of any culturable material, double-strength sulfa, oral and ointment. One of those old workhorses that don't get over-prescribed because there's no profit for the drug companies so they don't push it.

Later that day, Dave declared that the hot tub (the spa we got on Freecycle last year and finally got wired and surrounded by a redwood deck) was up and running, so we decided to try it out. Now, not only are there no lights out there, but between the house and the tub are: porch, stairs, concrete walkway through overgrown hedge. I gaily trotted out, draped in a towel, barefoot, carrying candle and matches, with thoughts of romance. Tripped and fell hard on the edge of the concrete -- no icky details here, except to say many ouchies and minus a huge chunk of skin from the palm of one hand. Ice, debridement, bandages. At least, I say through tears, it won't get infected.

It hasn't. Sulfa is not happy-making for whatever ails my skin. It is also not happy-making for my tummy or yuckily coated tongue or my sense of vim and vigor. Either that, or the infection really wiped me out. Not that I'm complaining -- face looks and feels great, almost healed, and palm is indeed not infected, so it should heal fast, too.

So I am moving slowly through days, writing okay and sleeping a lot but not much exercise (or, truth to be told, things I don't want to do). I did play hostess for our annual Harvest Festival on Saturday -- tons of house-preparing, made bread, roasted thick slabs of halibut, the rest potluck, much good conversation had by all. Probably too much too soon.

So, more rest. Indulging myself, not pushing it. Lots of yogurt and tummy mint tea. Two and a half days to go on the sulfa.
