and a covey of quail has taken up residence in our garden. Mostly, they hang out in the vineyard, which is fenced-within-a-fence and hence, coyote-proof. They venture forth into garden areas where Dave has newly sown cover crop (after seeds as well as insects). They are unbelievably cute, the males with their little forward-facing topknots and cries of "Chicago! Chicago!" Dave says they are growing accustomed to him working in the garden, and we hope so. Despite the loss of a tithe of seeds, they contribute much -- fewer insect pests and many smiles on our faces.
