GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY
Sep. 4th, 2007 06:49 pmThe Helsinki Agreement... heard of it? Wonder why it's not banner front-page headlines? Because it's about people working together to solve their problems nonviolently, not shooting each other up?
In case you missed it, leaders of Iraq's Sunni and Shia communities met secretly in Helsinki, in a conference convened by
the John W. McCormack graduate school of policy studies at the
University of Massachusetts in Boston and organized by former Finnish
president Martti Ahtisaari. Participants included representatives from the reconciliation movement in South Africa, and Martin McGuiness, former IRA commander. If Northern Ireland and South Africa can find ways to resolve their differences, in the latter case with admirable wisdom, then they do indeed have something to teach all of us. That the Iraqi leaders have sought their advice is inspiring. Check out this editorial in (British) The Independent: http://news.independent.co.uk/world/middle_east/article2927109.ece
Now, do you suppose the US occupation force will let the Iraqis heal their country?
