Two stories in the local paper, one sad, the other sad-but-inspiring.

Last week, a house along Highway 9 burned, firefighters from all over. The most likely cause was a cooking fire that got out of control. The firefighters were unable to search the house because it was so full of stacks of boxes, papers, and debris that they could not get through. The resident's body was not found until after the fire had been put out. Hoarding is a mental disease that is usually considered eccentric and a bit disgusting, but otherwise benign. Not in this case.

A letter to the editor: a woman struck a deer with her car, as often happens in this area. She injured it badly, but it was still alive, thrashing about. FOUR people stopped to help -- to direct traffic, to comfort the hysterical woman, to drag the deer off the road. While the sheriff was summoned, one of the bystanders cradled the deer, talking to it until it died, telling it that it was all right to let go. I find this incredibly moving. The driver never learned the names of her helpers.
