No, I haven't stood in line. No, I won't. I will most likely wait until it comes out in pb and try not to listen to spoilers. this strategy worked well enough for the last one.

HOWEVER, I am delighted, utterly delighted, to see such a frenzy of anticipation about a BOOK. A book that kids are in a lather to read. Oh, it warms the cockles of this author's heart... even if the book isn't mine. It's a book! People are lining up to BUY the book! And maybe a few of them will buy ANOTHER book as well.

It is of the goodness.

It is nice to see so much excitement about a stack of paper and ink, and young people in book stores.

When I was in charge of the library at Rose's elementary school back in the '90s, we'd hoped that the wave of enthusiasm for the "Goosebumps" series would encourage kids -- particularly boys who were otherwise reluctant readers -- to pick up other books. To our disappointment, it didn't happen. Not only that, but they eventually tired of the predictable and repetitious plots and stopped reading.

Whatever else I may say about the Harry series -- and I have enjoyed both the books and the movies -- it has not gotten boring, and it does seem to have promoted YA reading.

Any idea if J.K. Rowling will keep writing?

I was talking with the manager at the Roseville B&N this week and she seemed to have the inside slant. Word is that Rowling plans to take a good breather, do some traveling, decompress -- but also that she hasn't ruled out doing a little "filling in" of the entire Potter series with shorter pieces of back story and lost threads, etc. I can't speak to the accuracy of that, of course, but it sounds like a fine business plan to me.

Also, word is there's going to be a big fat vacuum in the YA market, so now's a good time to get your proposals ready. To the computer, Batman! :)
