1. The war of the skunks. It's skunk mating season and several were laying claim to underneath our house. In the middle of the night, we'd be awakened by Squeak-squeak-squeak and stink-stink-stink. Apparently, the males squirt one another in their sparring. I discovered how hard it is to get back to sleep when the source of the stink is right under the bedroom. Dave, bless him, got up innumerable times to block off access points in the middle of the night (when they're outside, so they can't get back in.) 3 or 4 rounds of this later, we think we've kept them out.

2. Frost damage. Despite our best efforts, we think our grapefruit has suffered from the very cold weather awhile. We are losing many more fruits than usual when they fall off, already with soft spots. Often, if I pick them up right away, I can salvage the good halves. Not that this is a crisis, as the tree is prolific and there is more than enough for the 2 of us. The rest goes into compost, part of the "nutritional ecology of the garden."

3. We are deciding what to plant, trying some varieties of dry bean this year, those you cannot find in the market. One previously on our list was Scarlet Runner. It's off not because it's not a wonderful bean (it is) but because a local health food store carries it. I'm adventurous and want to try something new! Dry beans, even gourmet varieties, are cheap and good when bought commercially, so I don't see any monetary savings in growing them. But sometimes that's the best way to enjoy heirloom and rare varieties.
