Our big social event is a fall Harvest Festival, which was held on Saturday. We spent most of the week getting house and grounds ready. There's a fun hedge maze between the house and the barbecue area, plus kid-proofing some of the outdoor areas with caution tape. I made bread, Lebanese eggplant salad, spiced apples, and my friend Lyn helped with a tomato and basil salad. Dave barbecued 10 lbs of Freddy's -- marinated tri-tip, his one exception to vegetarianism. We did our usual no-alcohol for the first half, so everyone could be comfortable. A little wine after that. As usual, it was a potluck, with amazing food.
What a wonderful assortment of friends! My lovely daughter,
mira_fastfire came, even though her partner was off sky-diving; Quakers and people from Dave's work, and writers and neighbors. A whole passel of kids this year, having fun in maze and newly-remodeled treehouse. Dave organized a group to pick and shuck corn, which became part of the feast. One of the pleasures of this event is watching people make connections, and that particular magic was in abundance. I'm currently basking in that special satisfaction that comes from my friends having a wonderful time together.
Such a friendly gathering, people even stayed to help wash dishes. Sunday, I cleaned the floors before moving the furniture back, so everything is tidy and almost put-back, and we're done with entertaining.
