Okay, 6 things about myself, but I won't tag anyone else -- I invite people who haven't done this to consider themselves tagged.

1. I have naturally curly hair. As in, really curly, as in, irrepressibly curly. When I was a teen, the fashion was straight hair. Nothing I did could induce my hair to uncurl. Now I wear it short and bouncy, to the envy of my straight-haired peers.

2. I studied calligraphy with Lloyd Reynolds. This is extraordinary not only for the love of letters I still have today, but for the experience of an inspiring teacher, who more than anyone else introduced beautiful writing to the Western US. He taught calligraphy, but also Buddhism and Daoism and Western civilization and the poetry of William Blake, all one seamless whole.

3. I prefer fresh raspberries to chocolate and sun-warmed fresh lychee on a beach with the wind blowing the scent of palymra blossoms on Kauaii to almost anything else (edible). My preferred method of making hot chocolate is to mix unsweetened very dark cocoa powder with a little milk until smooth, then fill the cup with more (nonfat) milk and a tiny bit of sweetener and microwave the whole frothy thing, then top with cinnamon.

4. I am a Red Diaper baby. You're grinning if you know what that is, and scratching your head if you don't. Mostly, I'm quiet about politics; I just think radical thoughts. Therefore, I find unprogrammed Quaker worship works well for me.

5. I love to dance. And I don't want to be part of any revolution that says I can't. (See #4)

6. I cannot remember a time when I did not write stories. I think my first attempt at a book was in 4th grade, when I wrote, illustrated, and bound a book about how a horse saved the world by bringing peace to the warring animals in Africa (see #4). I filled notebook after notebook with horse and dog stories. My favorite thing to do with my friends in high school was to sit around, each of us with a portable typewriter on our laps, and write. In college, I didn't have much time for fiction, except in the summers, so I kept a journal and wrote poetry. The first thing I did after I graduated was to write a novella.
