Puppy Reincarnation AKA name change

Well, we started with a call name of Casey, but it did not last a fortnight. His registered name is Darcy vom Steinbeckland. The "vom Steinbeckland" is the name of the kennel that bred him, so we don't get to change that. We had to pick an individual name that began with D, because litters are named that way. So our puppy comes from the 4th litter, the "D" litter.

Initially, I thought it would be cool to name him for one of the minor elvish characters from The Lord of the Rings, but found none that began with D that were at all possible. (Denethor? I would not inflict that on a dog!) So we got out ye olde baby names booke, and there was Darcy. He'll be tall, dark, and handsome, with a bit of white lace at his throat and gold dust on his paws.

Jane Austen triumphs over J. R. R. Tolkien!

For a bit, we were quite happy with the two names, and then Rose and Marcie came over with their two godchildren (to play with the puppy, of course!) And Marcie went, "Oh, Lord Darcy!"

That clinched it. Jane Austen and Randall Garrett!

And of course he's young enough -- just 9 weeks -- so he hasn't even figured out that he has a name. We still slip and an occasional "Casey" slips out (just like we sometimes find ourselves saying "Oka" when we mean "the dog") but we will slowly train ourselves.

Love the name Darcy! So perfect for a high pedigree dog!

Darcy goes with the 'vom' in his name. :-)

Those big paws! He's going to be a Large Dog, all right.

Lord Darcy, with a perfect pedigree. Sounds marvelous, for a marvelous puppy.

Yes, we think so, too. Although we had to take a somewhat roundabout path to it.

His father was 85-87 pounds when competing in Schutzhund, so yes, a big dog. But both parents are amazing athletes, so he'll be strong and nimble as well as big. Oy, are we going to have to train this dog!

Well, he's pretty marvelous at the moment as he's fast asleep. But at other times he resembles a toddler with a chainsaw. To his credit, he is quickly learning that teeth do not interact with human skin or furniture or... But he's showing signs of being very strong willed, so we will be starting classes rsn. Already working on sit/eye-contact/hand-targeting and that mysterious dance known as walking on a leash. He's frighteningly smart.

Waiting on the okay from the vet (10 weeks -- Darcy's 9 weeks now) to play with other (vaccinated) dogs...

Lord Darcy is a splendid name for a splendid boy.
