Time to stop f@rting around had come and gone, so I betook myself to
my friendly local doc. We poked and prodded and discussed. The knee
was much more swollen than when she'd seen it a week and a half ago. I
said okay to her treatment plan. In her judgment, the primary
inflammation is in the pes anserina bursa (inside of the knee), common
in women who are large or have ample hips (the latter applies to me,
although I don't look it, since my padding is slender, the ampleness
is on the inside, for easy baby-birthing). Another possibility is that
it's related to the piriformis/sciatica problem I had earlier this
year. She injected the bursa with steroids, that will filter through
the surrounding tissues.

I got x-rays this morning just to be sure there's nothing else, like
arthritis. My homework includes more ice, staying off the knee as much
as possible for 3 days, then resuming non-weight-bearing activity. I
have to research if there's a place to do water aerobics or if I can
locate a friend with a stationary bike.

So far, so good. Other than (expected) soreness at the injection site,
the knee is feeling pretty good, and I'm trying not to go too nuts.
The ice actually feels good. I did seated upper body weights this
morning and will do Pilates mat workout tomorrow.

X-rays were a hoot, as I remember much of this stuff from my
chiropractor days. The tech let me see the films of knee and neck (no
connection, but since I've had a couple of flareups of neck pain, we
wanted to check). I have only limited expertise in extremity x-ray
interpretation, but I didn't see any signs of degenerative joint
disease -- nice open joint space, no bony changes. Neck looks
reassuringly okay, ditto, although I don't have much of a normal
curve. Bone quality looks good, although you can't see osteoporosis
on x-ray until there's a lot of loss.

Hi there. You don't know me, but I'm a friend of your (absolutely wonderful) daughters. :) Would you mind if I added you to my friends list?

(And BTW, hope your knee mends soon!)
