By now, the name Nigeria has for most of us become associated with email scams. Or news of violence. So when Shanon Frediani, who attends our local Quaker meeting, spoke about traveling there to set up computerized libraries in the schools, I wanted to learn more. I knew Shanon from the beautiful songs-without-words she offered as ministry. I knew that she and her husband John performed in prisons. What I did not know is that she and John felt led by the inner Light to share the miracles of technology with children so far away.

Most Nigerian children never see a textbook. Yet it's possible to pack thousands of volumes into an "eGranary" hard drive, hook it up to a dozen donated used laptops, and open the world to kids hungry to learn. I still don't know the whole story of how Shanon and John came to meet with educators in Jos. But I did get to see something amazing when Betty DeValcourt and Santa Cruz Friends Monthly Meeting responded.

Shanon, John and their son Joseph, and Betty are now in Jos. They not only brought laptops and eGranary libraries, but helped organize a peace conference. You can see pictures and read about their trip here.
