Badly needed, as last year was a dry one, we had mandatory water conservation last summer, and we were (I think past tense, haven't checked the official gauge) behind even last year's rainfall. The roads, little windy 1+ lane country roads, but paved, so who's complaining, are a mess, branches and leaves and mud and downed trees closing most of them at one time or another in the last 24 hours.

Normally, we're snug and cozy at such times. When the power went out this morning, however, we waited for the generator to kick in. Nada. Dave trotted out to the shed and came back, wet and muttering vile things. So, what can we do without electricity? Oh, lots of things. Play piano (huzzah!), read. Play with dog. Take a nap. Did all of the above.

Managed to scrounge candles and Aladdin lamp (which also generates heat, very nice) and Dave found a few chunks of dry wood of size suitable for burning in the yet-uncleaned wood stove. (Cleaning said stove and chopping and stacking wood were autumn chores that never did get done in the frenzy of making-wine-out-of-everything.)

Eventually, neighbor's invitation to come on over and share their hearth and generator repairman arrived, and at about the same time. House now heating (gas heater but electric thermostat), catching up on a few things. Enjoying hot chocolate. May change proposed dinner stir-fry to hearty soup and corn muffins, for the comfort value. Windstorms predicted for later. Be nice, generator.
