A hot bright day. Indian summer weather. Juggling laundry and catching up after working day job yesterday.
Chapter 25 of SEVEN-PETALED SHIELD keeps growing. I suspect it's really 2 or 3 chapters, all strung together. And I really do have to elaborate on the horse race. A good way to re-enter writing trance state after having my head in blood pressure checks, Rx refills and other stuff yesterday.
The local metro is on strike, as of yesterday, so I'll have to break off early and schlep down to Aptos to pick up Rose and 2 of her hapless classmates. It's really not that much a burden. For one, it motivates me to get cracking on the chapter -- no time to noodle around, waiting for inspiration. Mostly, I'm happy to help her be successful in school, and I'm glad she's meeting other students. It's difficult enough to create and participate in an academic community while commuting such a distance.
I found that the friendships I made in college were very different from those in high school. There are a couple of people from h.s. I'd be curious to get in touch with (but since my h.s. doesn't do reunions, that's unlikely) but I still have special, close friendships with those from college. My best college friend and I -- hi, Bonnie! -- have been part of each other's lives since 1965. 40 years. Through growing up and grad school and breakups/divorces and kids and career changes. That's truly amazing.
