This moment of writerly humor was inflicted upon me by my lovely [livejournal.com profile] rosehelene

Having commuted over the hill to Baycon 2 days now, a smile is most welcome.

I was going to commute to Baycon this year, but I decided I had spent all my reserves.

Next year for sure.

As an English major and writer, I'm also highly amused.

(Also wandered over from [livejournal.com profile] jaylake.)

My husband will have a hysterical fit of laughter on this one. Let me give you the story from his school days.

Teacher: "These are not real birds. Patrick White meant these imaginary birds to be a metaphor."

Students: "But they're flying! Squawking!"

Teacher: "They're imaginary."

Students: "Then what about here where they're eating the birds?"

Teacher: "Oh. Then perhaps they are real."

As a writer and a literature professor, I remind the writer that it doesn't matter what the writer meant. As a writer and a literature professor, I remind the professor that it doesn't matter what the professor means. All that matters is what the reader takes away from the writing. New criticism lives.

*Snerk* This reminds me of when I showed a short story I wrote to my then-English teacher in high school, and he spent 20 minutes expounding to me, with praise, about all the symbolism and literary references I managed to pack into such a short space. I simply smiled and nodded and thanked him, without ever mentioning that not a single thing he detailed had ever occurred to me in the writing.

I've had that same experience, although with a book group. They'd read one of my novels and invited me to visit them. Yes, smile nicely and nod and try not to feel clueless. I did know what I meant, but it had nothing to do with what they were asking about.
