Finally have achieved some traction on the next Darkover book, whose working/probable title is The Children of Kings. (I inherited the title and it pertains only vaguely to the story, but there's been so much buzz about it, I might as well roll with it rather than leave readers waiting.) I had started drafting it between rewrites of The Alton Gift, then realized I had to go back in time to Hastur Lord for background on one of the viewpoint characters, so it's been a while since I've had my mind in this story. I went through a too-long period of "Searching For The Way IN" but have -- fingers crossed! -- gotten past that gnarly stage. We are now up and running -- both in terms of writing and in terms of what my protag is doing. He has Left D/o/d/g/e Thendara and is officially On Adventure. Stay tuned.

Music to an author's ears!

I'll post snippets as they seize me...

Each book does seem to have its own rhythm, doesn't it -- writing it, that is, as well as the final product. I used to get so discouraged when the beginning wasn't right, until I learned that my first draft beginnings are NEVER right. I'm always off in Point of Entry or some other fundamental issue. I just have to write and write and wait for that magic moment when the story itself takes over. Then push through to the end, take a deep breath, and dive back into the opening, literary scalpel in hand.
