Northern and Central California have been hit with one wave of storm after another. Gosh, we're even in the national news. Winter rain is usual -- we get all our rainfall between November and May, most years. This season started out drier than normal, but has caught up with a vengeance. The last day has been particularly wild, with roads closed all over the mountains and power out since last night. Dave had run some errands in Scotts Valley (about half way to Santa Cruz) and couldn't get home until evening because of road closures, mostly trees down, but sometimes power lines too. At least 5 local roads were out, including Highway 9 both north and south from Boulder Creek and Alba Road, one of the emergency evacuation routes. I think they're all open now.

Our nice neighbors invited us over for New Years Eve dinner and, as Dave was stuck on some road somewhere, I went over, bringing offerings of home made bread, an oil lamp and extra oil. We have a standby generator, so were not without power for more than a few minutes, but they don't. We ate by candle and lamplight, their home heated by a wood burning stove. Dave showed up a little while later, and we had a lovely time together.

Upon returning home, Dave decided to start the new year by sorting all his old clothes, boxes of things he hadn't worn in years, that no longer fit, or were bought by his parents or a very ex-girlfriend. We bagged them up for donation, making room for fewer things that fit who he is now. Summer clothes got put into clear plastic storage boxes on top closet shelves. Ah, the new order prevails!

Here's to new beginnings and a peaceful, joy-filled new year!

We're right now getting the top storm spun off that same deep low, and it's hitting 60mph winds off Vancouver Island although only 30mph here. We're nestled (nice fung shui) below a tall mountain (the 1300' one I work on top of) and our power substation is also nestled so we rarely have our power go off. I have, however, lit a couple of candles just to make sure.

This holiday I'm doing the same as Dave and cleaning out my closet. Workout clothes are now front and centre, and my shoes have a new rack on the back of my bedroom door (I want to Dress more often for work and this will help).

Happy New Year!

Sounds like a nice evening in spite of -- or because of -- the ambience of candles and lamps. Ya, you're definitely in the national news with your storms. Good luck with it, and happy new year!

I find that making a clear distinction between Work and Non-work is very useful, especially at reminding me about personal boundaries. I generally Work at cons, and have slightly overlapping wardrobes with day-job Work. I also tend to wear different jewelry at cons/day-job and also makeup (aka War Paint).

Thank you. So far, so good, although I'm reminded of the prayer,

"God, I haven't been mean-spirited, critical, snoopy, irritable, judgmental or unreasonable all day. But I'm going to get out of bed now, and then I'll need all your help!"

More rain today, although at a more moderate rate. I think we've had close to 30" with this storm, but have to check to be sure. I pooped out of my piano lesson because I simply did not want to get in the car and go anywhere I didn't have to. (I am, however, doing some laundry, which involves mad dashes out to the garage, where the washing machine & dryer live). I have day job tomorrow, so I will have to brave the roads to Santa Cruz. Hopefully, cleanup will be well under way. Driving home from Quaker meeting on Sunday, there was debris all over the roads, small branches, lots of leaf clutter and a few sodden causalties (squirrel, raccoon, that sort of beastie).

I have the disadvantage of being able to dress casually at work, being a techy/artist type, so my clothes are all for anytime, mostly. No distinctions at all, except exercise wear to sweat in.

Harder to draw boundaries.
