Oh, definitely. Following Hamlet halfway across Europe, no girlfriend in sight, "good night, sweet prince," and all that. But in Shakespeare's time that didn't mean he was necessarily gay, it meant lots of other emotionally intense, socially and politically necessary things. Shakespeare's full of men not afraid to say they love one another, even when they're acting like idiots over a woman.
"Gay" as we understand it today didn't exist back then anyway. But it's still a strong emotional attachment - and from the outside it's impossible to say whether it's "romantic" or "friendship" because the two are so easily blurred together. And any romantic attachment likely wouldn't be consummated anyway.
And honestly? Ophelia was no good for Hamlet anyway. :P
Also on this vague subject, Marcie and I are reading Unnatural Death by Dorothy L. Sayers at the moment and having a blast. I keep falling into fits of giggles whenever the lesbian couples are talked about. Such a different way of looking at things - all in the context of "friendship".
